Captains Comment

Ealing B and Ealing A travelled to Harrow to play their junior B and A teams. Both Ealing teams were fielding teams below average strength, and after a short 2.5 hour session both went home as losers. One common feature of the games was the ability of the juniors to to play well quickly and many of the games resulted in Ealing players struggling when very short of time.

David, on bottom board was first to finish. Having won a piece in a Giuoco Piano, he was able to press home the advantage with further material gains before his opponent resigned.

When I saw Alastair's game on board two he was a pawn down, but his opponent did not appear to be threatening anything. A draw was offered and accepted at the first time of asking.

Nandinee, on board four, played solidly and maintained an even position but ran down her clock until the flag fell.

Tony played with white on board three. His English opening produced a pawn capture with a strong attack after seven moves. The computer showed him at least 2.5 up thereafter until the 45th move when, having reached an endgame that could only be resolved by a pawn promotion and with possibilities for both players, finding the right move was critical. Thinking time was required, but Tony didn't have any and the game was lost.

We now needed a win on top board to secure a draw. Sami opened with c4. He said it was his first try with the English, and all was going well, with active play down the a,b files. But Sami allowed his opponent to trap the Bishop that spearheaded that activity. Now, very short of time, Sami was on the defensive and effectively a piece down. It was not long before his flag fell.

The final result; a good win for Harrow Juniors by 3.5-1.5.
